Too Much & Not enough: Part 2

Are you overcommitted…and underinvested?

Part of what I love in my work with clients is the simple power of taking a pause. In our busy, one-foot-in-front-of-the-other lives, reflecting and dreaming can incite action, and then change. When we bring awareness to something, we can’t unsee it.

It can be an uncomfortable, even scary, thing to commit to yourself and decide that what you want matters every day.

Here is how to break it down so it’s less scary—and more clear. First, choose one of the areas from the questionnaire in Too Much & Not Enough: Part 1 that you are most interested in exploring. Then, Consider what a “10” would look like. This has nothing, zero, nil, to do with perfection. This is not a competition. Rather, a “10” is what you imagine ideal would look like for you— right now — knowing that it may change.

Perhaps you’d like a new job. Perhaps you would like to be more physically fit. Perhaps you’d like to be less emotionally exhausted. Perhaps you would like improved relationships at work or at home. Perhaps you’d like to stop spinning and overwhelm and get things done. Perhaps you’d like to leave your imposter syndrome behind. Perhaps you’d like to speak up more and contribute.

Whatever it is that you are dreaming, focus in and hold it in your mind for a minute.

  1. Write down all the things you like and appreciate about yourself (at least 12).

  2. Why do you want to make changes in this aspect of your life?

  3. If you achieved this what would it mean to you?

  4. How would you imagine feeling when you achieve this?

  5. List all the reasons why this is the best time to pursue this goal.

  6. List any challenges do you imagine will arise in trying to achieve this?

  7. What strategies could you work on to overcome those challenges?

  8. Whose support may be important or helpful in order for you to achieve your goal?

  9. List all the things you’d need to do to accomplish this outcome. In any order. Resist the urge to self edit. Dictating this may be best!

  10. Commit by writing down your goal—(Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) placing it in a prominent place and thinking about when you plan every day.

You and only you can imagine the life you’d like to move towards, the one beautiful life that was intended for you and that only you can deliver.

Three Superpowers:

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”— Lao Tzu

  • Commit to small steps: Small steps matter. Consistent small steps result in big outcomes.

Discomfort is the currency of your dreams.”— Brooke Castillo

  • Embrace discomfort: Growth is not comfortable for humans. It cannot hurt you and we avoid it nonetheless.

There are winning quarters, and there are learning quarters.” — Dan Sullivan

  • Stay positive. Measure progress backward against where you started, not to your ideal.
